Study finds new role in cell division for well-known transport protein

New research has found that the protein clathrin, well known as a building block of containers used to transport biological cargo inside cells, also plays a key role in helping cells divide properly.

The study, featured on the cover of the August 20th edition of The Journal of Cell Biology, specifically found that clathrin stabilizes centrosomes, cellular structures that play a vital role in orderly cell division and replication.

“Clathrin is doing more than we thought,” said study leader Frances Brodksy, DPhil, a faculty member in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, a joint department of the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine.
