Breakthrough Prize recipient Botstein pays it forward

David Botstein, award-winning scientist and the former director of Princeton’s Lewis-Sigler Institute, has announced a decision to donate $400,000 to four U.S. academic institutions that offer advanced technology courses in the field of biology, including $100K to UC San Francisco. Botstein was one of eleven recipients of the inaugural Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, announced earlier this year. The Prize, founded by internet giants Art Levinson, Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, and Yuri Milner, recognizes excellence in research aimed at curing intractable diseases and extending human life. Botstein researches disease markers in the human genome. He has pledged $100,000 awards to support innovative educational programs at UCSF, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, MIT, and Davidson College. Each winner of the Breakthrough Prize receives $3 million. At UCSF, Botstein has specifically directed his support to the recently built Teaching Lab at the Mission Bay campus and to the Integrated Program in Complex Biological Systems (ipCBS), which was created to address the acute need for interdisciplinary graduate training in the context of quantitative biology and biomedical research.
